How to Edit Borderlands Saves Safely

Learn how to edit Borderlands 2, 3 and 4 saves: find the right file, keep a backup, change values in your browser, download and restore your save.

Edit a Borderlands save by making an independent backup, importing the correct file into its game editor, reviewing the changes, and replacing the local file with the game closed. Keep the original character and profile together whenever you want a complete restore point.

Before you start

Choose the game you will actually launch and the account folder containing its saves. Borderlands 2, Borderlands 3 and Borderlands 4 use different formats and profile filenames. A .sav extension alone does not tell you which editor to use.

Use a computer browser to work with PC saves. If you open these guides on a phone, find the folder and carry out replacement on the computer running the game. The browser tool reads only the file you select; it does not search your game folders or replace local files automatically.

Decide what you want to change before importing. A cash adjustment, a level change, a different item and a shared storage upgrade involve different values. Start with a small, recognizable change, then review the rest of the character before preparing the final download.

Keep an untouched backup

Exit the game completely and wait for current launcher synchronization to finish. Copy the whole account save folder to a separate backup folder outside the live save tree. Preserve the original filenames inside it and give the backup folder a name you will recognize later.

Copy numbered characters and the profile together. This is particularly useful when editing a shared bank or account unlocks: restoring only the character will not roll back shared profile changes. Keep a second backup when you are about to make a substantially different build.

After importing, use Download original backup to save the exact file selected for that session. Store this separately from the edited output. The original download complements the whole-folder backup; it does not replace a profile or other characters that you did not import.

Edit Borderlands 4 saves

Open the BL4 save editor. On Windows, start from Documents\My Games\Borderlands 4\Saved\SaveGames\<account-folder>\Profiles\. Numbered character .sav files are in the client subfolder, while profile.sav is in Profiles.

For a Steam file, enter the owning 17-digit Steam ID. You can copy it from the account save-folder name or Steam account details. For an Epic file, use the owning 32-character Epic Account ID from Epic account settings.

The ID supplies the file's encryption key locally. It is not a password, and the editor does not require a Steam or Epic sign-in. Check the complete value and owning account if the file fails to decrypt. A display name, email address or SHiFT ID is a different identifier.

Import the numbered character for currency, level, XP, skills and carried equipment. Import the profile for its shared data. Review the imported summary before changing values. Keep both files in your backup if the intended setup depends on shared storage or progression.

For full paths and folder selection, read Borderlands 4 save file location.

Edit Borderlands 3 saves

Open the Borderlands 3 save editor. Steam and Epic PC saves use Documents\My Games\Borderlands 3\Saved\SaveGames\<account-folder>\. Numbered files such as 1.sav contain characters, and profile.sav contains shared account data.

No Steam ID or Epic ID is needed for BL3. Import the file directly. Use a character file for money, Eridium, level, XP, ordinary skills and inventory. Use the profile for bank items, Golden and Diamond Keys, Vault Cards, Guardian progression, Borderlands Science, storage SDUs and cosmetics.

When moving BL3 PC saves between Steam and Epic, start the destination version once to create its account folder, then exit completely. Back up both folders before copying files, especially if the destination already has characters. The two platform folders and cloud copies remain separate after the move.

Character and item levels are separate from weapon Mayhem settings and world Mayhem progression. Review each named field for the change you want, and keep the profile backup when working with shared progression. The BL3 save location guide explains the folder layout and file roles.

Edit Borderlands 2 saves

Open the Borderlands 2 save editor. The normal PC path is Documents\My Games\Borderlands 2\WillowGame\SaveData\<account-folder>\. Files such as Save0001.sav contain characters, while the shared profile is profile.bin.

BL2 does not need an account ID. Choose the level cap matching your installed DLC before importing: 50, 61, 72 or 80. The editor cannot infer installed DLC from the folder name. Keep character level and equipment suited to the game version you will launch.

Import the numbered character for money, currencies, ordinary progression and equipment. The shared stash belongs to profile.bin, distinct from the character's own bank. Do not rename the profile into a character filename or swap it with a profile from a different game.

BL2 community item codes use BL2(...). Preserve the full code when preparing an equipment edit. Paste BL2 codes into Add items for the character backpack or bank. Import profile.bin separately for Golden Keys. Borderlands 3 codes beginning BL3( and BL4 Base85 serials use different formats. For the full account-folder layout, read Borderlands 2 save file location.

Preview, apply, Undo and Reset

Read the imported character's name, level and file type before editing. Enter the change you want and inspect the preview. Some changes have linked values: a level adjustment can change XP, and a favorite flag can clear conflicting item labels. Review the complete list before applying it.

Apply accepts the displayed changes into the browser draft. Undo steps back through accepted edits; Reset returns the draft to the imported original. Neither action changes a live file on disk. Keep the editor open until you have downloaded the result and original backup you need.

If an operation fails, read the nearby message and correct the input while keeping the original file. For a decryption failure in BL4, check the platform and account ID. For an item-code error, check the game's prefix, complete punctuation and selected item. Download only after the editor accepts the change and prepares its output.

Replace the character file

Download the edited file and locate it in your browser's download folder. Confirm that the download completed and that the file has the expected extension. Enable filename extensions in File Explorer so you can distinguish .sav from a text document or an added extension.

With the game closed, copy the edited file to the account folder under the original filename. Browsers can append a number or another suffix to repeated downloads; remove that suffix deliberately when replacing the matching slot. Keep the untouched original outside the live folder.

Restart the game, select the character you edited, and review its level, currencies and inventory. Keep the original and edited copies separate if you want to switch between setups later. Do not overwrite another character simply because its file has a nearby number.

Steam and Epic cloud synchronization

Finish existing synchronization before taking the initial backup. Pause the game's cloud synchronization while making a deliberate replacement or restore. Steam's per-game Cloud setting is in Properties; Epic provides cloud-save settings for supported games.

When a cloud conflict appears, identify the copy containing the state you want. Compare the file slot, account folder, backup and modification time. A newer timestamp alone does not tell you which build or character you intended to keep.

Resume synchronization after reviewing the chosen local state. Store independent backups outside the live folder and outside any location the launcher routinely replaces. Cloud synchronization can carry an unwanted edit to another computer as readily as a wanted one.

Recover your save

Close the game and pause synchronization around the restore. Copy the untouched original into its original account folder and filename. Restore the profile too if you are rolling back shared data. Keep the edited output elsewhere if you might want to inspect or use it again.

Launch the game and select the restored character. Review the character and shared data, then resume synchronization for the version you intend to keep. A browser Reset cannot perform this disk restore; the original backup is the file you need.

Save-editing FAQ

Does the editor replace my live save automatically?

No. It generates a separate browser download. Close the game and manually replace the matching local file under its original filename.

Should I back up the profile as well as the character?

Yes. Copy the complete account folder for a restore point covering both individual characters and shared profile data.

Which game needs an account ID?

Borderlands 4 uses the owning Steam ID or Epic Account ID for encryption. Borderlands 2 and Borderlands 3 PC imports do not need an account ID.

Can Undo restore a file I already replaced?

Undo changes the browser draft. Restore a file on disk by copying your untouched backup back to its original folder and filename.
