Borderlands 4 Save File Location

Find your Borderlands 4 save files on PC. Exact Steam and Epic folders, how to tell character saves from profile.sav, and how to back up and restore them.

Borderlands 4 PC character saves normally live in C:\Users\<Windows-user>\Documents\My Games\Borderlands 4\Saved\SaveGames\<account-folder>\Profiles\client\. Steam and Epic use the same save root with separate account folders. The shared profile.sav sits in Profiles, one level above the numbered character files.

Steam save folder

Open File Explorer, select Documents, and follow My Games\Borderlands 4\Saved\SaveGames\. Open the 17-digit Steam account folder, then Profiles\client. Its numbered .sav files are your characters.

Documents\My Games\Borderlands 4\Saved\SaveGames\<SteamID64>\
  Profiles\
    profile.sav
    client\
      1.sav
      2.sav

The Steam account folder is also a convenient place to find the Steam ID needed by the BL4 save editor. Copy all 17 digits from the folder belonging to your selected save. Do not use your Steam display name or SHiFT name instead.

If the normal Documents path is empty, open Windows' actual Documents entry rather than typing a fixed C:\Users path. OneDrive, another drive or another Windows account can change where Documents is located. Follow the same My Games tree under that location.

Epic Games save folder

Start with Documents\My Games\Borderlands 4\Saved\SaveGames\, open the account folder used by your Epic installation, and continue to Profiles\client for the numbered character files. Look in Profiles for profile.sav.

Use your Epic Account ID from Epic account settings when importing. The required ID is a 32-character hexadecimal value. Avoid substituting your Epic display name, email address or SHiFT ID.

When multiple account folders exist, keep them intact and identify the active folder before replacement. You can open the intended character in the game, save normally, exit completely, and compare the modification times. Confirm the character name and level in the editor after importing the file.

Which file is my character?

Files such as 1.sav, 2.sav and 3.sav are character slots. The number identifies a file slot; it does not tell you the class, character name or current level. Check those details after import before applying changes.

Use the numbered file for cash, Eridium, XP, skills and carried equipment. Do not rename profile.sav into a numbered character file. If you are uncertain which character a file contains, import it for inspection and leave the live files alone until the summary matches your intended Vault Hunter.

Enable filename extensions in File Explorer so you can see .sav clearly. A browser can add a suffix to a downloaded file, so check the full filename before putting an edited copy back. The live file should retain the original character filename.

What profile.sav stores

profile.sav contains shared account data, including the bank and shared progression. SDUs, cosmetics, Vault Powers and other account unlocks belong to the profile side of the save system. Import it when you want to use profile controls rather than edit one character's currency or inventory.

Back up the complete account folder when editing shared data. A single numbered character backup does not include the profile. Keeping the files together also gives you a clear return point when restoring both a character and shared settings.

How to find your Steam ID or Epic ID

For Steam, use the 17-digit save-account folder name or open Steam account details. For Epic, copy the 32-character Account ID from the account settings page.

The editor uses the owning ID to derive the file's encryption key locally. There is no Steam or Epic sign-in inside the editor. If the file does not decrypt, check that the ID belongs to the platform account that created the file, then copy the complete value again.

Back up your saves before editing

Close Borderlands 4 and wait for current cloud synchronization to finish. Copy the entire account folder to a separate folder outside the live save tree. Give the backup a recognizable name, and keep the original filenames inside it.

The editor also offers an original-file backup download. Save that before applying changes, but keep the folder backup when working with several characters or a profile. Undo and Reset affect the browser session; restoring files already replaced on disk requires your saved original.

Steam Cloud and restoring an older save

Pause the game's cloud synchronization while deliberately replacing a local file. Steam exposes the per-game Cloud setting in Properties; Epic offers cloud-save settings for supported games. Finish the replacement with Borderlands 4 closed, then load the character you intended to edit.

For restoration, close the game and copy the original backup into the same folder under the same filename. Restore the profile too if your changes affected it. If a cloud conflict appears, choose the copy containing the state you intend to keep rather than relying on the newest timestamp alone. Resume synchronization after reviewing that local state.

Borderlands 4 save location FAQ

Where is profile.sav in Borderlands 4?

Look in Documents\My Games\Borderlands 4\Saved\SaveGames\<account-folder>\Profiles\. Numbered character files are in the client subfolder.

Why is my save folder missing?

Check the actual Windows Documents location, including OneDrive or another drive, and the Windows account that played the game. Start the game and create a character if that account has no local save yet.

Is the Steam installation folder the save folder?

Use the Documents save tree first. The normal character-save location is separate from the Steam library folder containing the game installation.

Can I restore just one character?

Yes. With the game closed, copy that character's original numbered .sav back under its original filename. Restore profile.sav separately when you also want to roll back shared data.

Open the BL4 save editor to inspect your file, make changes and download an original backup.
