Borderlands 2 Save File Location

Find your Borderlands 2 save folder on PC. Identify character files and profile.bin, back up your saves and restore an edited or original file.

Borderlands 2 PC saves normally live in C:\Users\<Windows-user>\Documents\My Games\Borderlands 2\WillowGame\SaveData\<account-folder>\. Character files use names such as Save0001.sav, while the shared profile is profile.bin in the same account folder.

Windows PC save folder

Open File Explorer, choose Documents, and follow My Games\Borderlands 2\WillowGame\SaveData\. Open the account subfolder to find your characters and profile.

Documents\My Games\Borderlands 2\WillowGame\SaveData\<account-folder>\
  Save0001.sav
  Save0002.sav
  profile.bin

Start with the actual Windows Documents folder. If it is redirected to OneDrive or another drive, follow the same tree from that location. The Steam installation directory usually contains the game's program files rather than the character saves you need to edit.

If the folder does not exist, check the Windows user and account that played the game. Start Borderlands 2 and create a local character if that account has not saved one yet, then exit before checking again.

Which file is my BL2 character?

Files such as Save0001.sav and Save0002.sav are individual characters. The numbered slot does not tell you the character's class, name or level. Import the file into the BL2 save editor and check the character summary before changing anything.

Use these files for money, Eridium, XP, level, ordinary skill points and character equipment. Do not import profile.bin as a character or rename it to match a numbered slot.

When several files were modified during the same session, the timestamps may be close together. Confirm the imported character rather than choosing only the newest file. Keep a note of the original filename so the finished download returns to the right slot.

What profile.bin stores

profile.bin contains shared account data, including the shared stash and other account progression. It uses a different filename from the profile.sav used by Borderlands 3 and Borderlands 4.

The shared stash and an individual character's bank are distinct stores. Character data stays in the numbered .sav; profile data stays in profile.bin. Back up both when you are working on an account's equipment collection.

Copy the entire account folder for a complete restore point. A single character backup does not contain the shared profile, and a profile backup does not contain each character's mission state or inventory.

Do I need the account folder number?

You do not need to enter a Steam ID or Epic ID to edit a BL2 PC save. The folder's account label helps locate your files, but the browser editor imports the save directly.

If several account folders exist, use the one associated with the character you will launch. Save normally in the game, exit, inspect the changed file and confirm its character summary after import. Keep the other folders in place while identifying the active one.

Back up before editing

Close Borderlands 2 and let current cloud synchronization finish. Copy the whole account folder to a separate location outside the live SaveData tree. Keep the original filenames and give the backup folder a recognizable name.

Download the original backup offered by the editor before making changes. This preserves the exact imported file in addition to your folder backup. Keep both originals separate from edited downloads so a later replacement cannot overwrite them accidentally.

Choose the BL2 level cap matching your installed DLC when importing: 50, 61, 72 or 80. The save folder itself does not tell the editor which DLC you have installed. Read the BL2 editor's level-cap guide before changing progression.

Replace and restore BL2 saves

Download the edited .sav and check its full name. Your browser may add a suffix when another download has the same name. With the game closed, put the file into the correct account folder under the original character filename.

Pause cloud synchronization during a deliberate replacement. If a cloud conflict appears, identify the local or remote copy that contains the state you want. Review the selected character before resuming synchronization, and retain your independent backup.

To restore, close the game and copy the untouched original back to the same folder and filename. Restore profile.bin separately if you also changed shared data. Undo and Reset in the editor affect its browser session; use your saved backup to restore files already replaced on disk.

Borderlands 2 save location FAQ

What is the BL2 character filename?

PC character saves commonly use Save0001.sav, Save0002.sav and similar numbered names inside the account's SaveData folder.

Where is the Borderlands 2 profile?

profile.bin is in the same account folder as the numbered character saves, under Documents\My Games\Borderlands 2\WillowGame\SaveData\.

Do I need a Steam ID to import the file?

No. The BL2 PC editor imports the character file directly without an account-ID field.

Can I restore one character without replacing the others?

Yes. Close the game and restore that character's original .sav under the same filename. Restore profile.bin only when you also want to roll back shared profile data.

Open the Borderlands 2 save editor to inspect your character, make changes and download a backup.
